We found a clematis flower this morning. The honeybees are busy again. Calendulas are blooming in pots. Fennel flowers are reappearing. Lantanas and Turk's caps are renewed. One oxblood lily remains in bloom. Rain lilies are expected any day now. There are still monarch butterflies and hummingbirds. At last, there are flowers on the Pride of Barbados plants, all of which froze back to the ground and were very slow in returning this year. This morning, we saw our first hummingbirds of the season. This evening, they're still here. Their favorite flowers are Turk's caps. The flower is not as large as some, and it's a beautiful dark red (crimson). There's nothing pink or magenta about it. There are also black-eyed Susan (rudbeckia) flowers in strange places. They are the most beautiful, subtle color. They smell of licorice or anise. They came to us in a gift sack of narcissus bulbs, but we can't remember whether they came from Bastrop or from next door. White irises are the most common ones to be seen in old yards in Austin or nearby. There are many colors of ranunculus today. Joining all the other irises, are some that are entirely yellow. We have our first spiderwort and our first bachelor button. This is at least the second year for these. We seem to remember that they came from a bargain bin at the end of the season and that they were put into the ground quite late. The variety is the deep blue with a white stripe bisecting each petal of each floret. They look beautiful under cloudy skies and beautiful when the sun strikes them.
