Can Flour Box replace the lamented Bruce's pies?
These little pecan (and sometimes blueberry, apple, or cherry) pies were found by chance when the tire needed air, down at a former Texaco, now I forget what, station. Somebody in the household "needs" these pies fairly often, but this is the only place they've been sighted. Sometime when there is time, it will be necessary to call or write to Flour Box Baking Company, 125 East Jackson Square, Weimar, Texas 78962, voice (979) 725-6156, fax 979-725-6077. Someplace more convenient must sell these pies.

Bruce's Pies...remember these? I would often enjoy them with a carton of chocolate milk on my way to class at UTSA in the early 80's...if any recalls they sold them at Rudy's Corner aka Rudy's BBQ. They also sold them at the Old Timer convenieint store at Tarpon Drive nka Fair Oaks Parkway.
BRUCE'S PIES 801 SPRINGDALE RD.
My husband and I drove all over San Antonio looking for Bruce's pies. Unfortunately no one seemed to know what we were looking for. I'd give anything to find a store that sold these pies, I'd even be willing to purchase a whole batch wholesale.
An anonymous person gave an address but what city, and is the company still open? Please, please write back and let me know. Sandra
Bruce's Pies used to be made in Austin (Springdale Road, as the commenter remarks), but has been gone for quite some time. I didn't know that they were distributed in San Antonio, too. It was a very small operation, with just a couple of delivery trucks. I suppose that at this time of year you're missing peach pies. Nobody could beat Bruce's little pecan pies.
That's too bad. My mom has been bothering me to find her some Bruce's fried pies. So, no where to be found in South Texas?

They Still look like they are there. I don't know why I can't find then in stores. Several things on the internet show the same thing.
I'm sorry to say that the bruce's pies was closed in the 90's. he shut the business down and moved to california. I know this because my sister and I used to deliver these with our parents.
I have tried calling the phone number listed, but all it does is ring, and i have tried this at various times in the day.
I would give anything to have a chocolate pie!
Bruce's Pies had more than just a couple of delivery trucks, there were 2 in Waco until the early 90's when they closed down, and in the 90's before it closed there were a few trucks in Austin. They would deliver all over central Texas. To just north of Hillsboro, just west of Gatesville, not sure how far east they went, and obviously to San Antonio. I wish they would do a comeback. Surely there are investors out there that would be willing to do this!
I use to go to Allen Jr. high which was only a few blocks away from Bruce's in Austin and after school we would walk by and sometimes one of the guys would see us looking in and they would give us a pie still hot out of the oven and trust me when I say this, "Nothing comes even close to that." And Yes my mom still ask for Bruce's as well. Those were the days people.
I haven't stopped hoping that one
day I will see these slices of
heaven at the local store in
San Antonio, none of the local
name brands hold a candle to the
fresh and crispy golden brown
crust of one of these unique pies.
I hope Buttercrust, Mrs Bairds or
another 'big' bakery sees that
Bruce's pies are still well
remembered and will bring back
this old friend.

My parents and grandparents work at Bruce's Pie. My father still makes those small pecan and coconut pies!!! Raquel Austin,TX
If anyone is still interested in those Bruce's Pie (Pecan or Coconut) you may contact me at raquelmartinez29@hotmail.com
Yes , we would love them, trying to find them for my hubby for Christmas! We saw a place on Tx hill country reporter called Mamaws Fried pies, website, www.mamawsfriedpies.com and they look yummy and similiar and youc an mail order!
Used to get these in San Antonio when I was growing up. Moved 40 miles north into the hill country and they were there, as well as in Austin. A fairly large operation. Fried pies in opaque white wax paper with red and yellow writing on the pkgs, as I recall. Good pineapple, apricot and peach pies. Round pecan and coconut pies. Best store-bought fried pies ever, in my vast experience. Miss you, Bruce's Fried Pies. sniff, sniff
Hi Raquel,
This is Alan Fyke, I will email you as well. My Uncle Bob owned Bruce's Pies and my dad was the general manager. please contact me @ ffyke@austin.rr.com. We probably know each other. kind regards, Alan Fyke.
I have been recieving some emails saying that Bruce's Pie has been closed for some time now. Yes, that is TRUE. What I meant to say in the blog... was that my parents and grandparents USED to work there.
The world is just not the same since we can't find Bruce's Pies. What great memories back then. Can you imagine how wonderful our lives would be to have those pies again. It might make our planet better.
We used to get Bruce's pies in Victoria too! Those were the best. We don't like the Mrs Bairds pies because they are coated in sugar and the filling is not as good. So my family is always trying to find Bruce's or another brand that is as good (which is not happening!)
Alan, if this was a family business I think you should consider opening up again! You would already have a large customer base! We want our pies, lol!
My kingdom for a lemon pie.
I loved them all but chocolate was my husband's favorite. I used to put them in his lunch every day.
I have been looking for bruce's coconut pies for years in san antonio, if anybody know's how I can order some or contact someone who doe's let me know.lisaanthony2005@live.com
My great aunt lived on Gonzales street right around the corner. We would stop by and they would sell us the cracked "hot" pies for a dime a piece. They would be piled in a brown paper bag and the grease would start to soak through. They were delicious and I wished I had a chocolate one right now!
Oh..how my whole family misses these delicious pies, especially the apple....we used to buy them in Waco. A little hole in the wall hamburger joint called Cupp's that also had (and still does) the BEST hamburgers ever!!!...Still when we eat there it is not the same, because our dessert was the good ole Bruces pies!!! Sure wish they would come back!!! Everyone spread the word....Please....
I was telling my husband about Bruce's pies (he's from Kentucky) -I'm from San Antonio and used to walk to Rudy's Corner (the original Rudy's BBQ) from my house and get one. i used to eat them all the time - love the chocolate, pecan and coconut. I've been looking for them and didn't realize that they company had closed. I am so sad. I too wish they would bring them back!
Growing up in the 50's, 60's, 70's this along with Big Red were staples in our home. I loved, loved the pecan pies-bit more than the others; but, worth it. Those were the days. They had enough filling and the pie crust was wonderful. When you have had the best none will ever compare! So sad to hear no longer in business. Yes, whenever you would go to the ice house, there they were!
I remember my parents stopping at Bruce's Bakery on Springdale Road in Austin, TX and my mom would buy Bruce's Pecan and Coconut Pies and the Chocolate and Vanilla Cupcakes with the creme in the middle. There are a lot of imitators, but none of them comes even close to the taste of Bruce's pies. I miss those Coconut pie so much and now coconut has medically been removed from my diet. Maybe these messages will get back to the family of the Baker Bruce and they will open up again. They probably did not realize how popular their dessert were and the impact that Bruce's pies had on a community of people throughout the State of Texas and beyond. There is always hope.
Try Mindy Lu's fried pies. They can be found in various places. I know they are at the Flying J north of austin. They are a tad smaller but very close to Bruce's.
That's why we need to buy LOCAL! All the great stuff is gone because of the chain stores. Sad, very sad.
I remember when I was pregnant back in 1984, my husband used to bring me 3 and 4 of Bruce's Pineapple pies to the hospital. I have looked and have asked at different stores about these glorious pies but no one seems to know what the heck I'm talking about. Someone needs to bring these pies back into production.
What would i give right now for an good Bruces Apple Pie ,just finish eating another brand and it was salty and did't taste right all i could think about while eating it was i wish i had an bruces pie
There was nothing better than Bruces pecan pies. In high school that was my breakfast (along with a Dr. Pepper)
I miss the coconut pies the most. Whenever we would go home to New Braunfels I would always bring some back for my friends I miss them they were the best.
I'm from San Antonio, grew up on southside in 60's, 70's and 80's and would get Bruces pies and Lone Star ice and food store. 60's and 70's there were quite a few around, and slowly phased out. Parents and I loved all the flavors, of course with a big glass of milk!!
I grew up in seguin tx and Pic nPacwould always have them my favorite was pecan and coconut wow bring them back please
I grew in seguin tx and man my mom would pack my lunch with bruce's pie pecan man really miss them pies bring them back
Have wanted a Bruce's pineapple, cherry or lemon pie for years. Ran across MindyLu's at Brookshire's in Salado. They are very very close to Bruces and have satisfied my craving except for the little coconut and pecan Bruces. They have a website MindyLuPies.com.
I miss the coconut pies as well as those pecan pies. We were just talking about what happened to them. I live in Austin and had no idea that they had a bakery here, let alone the bakery had closed its doors. Is the bakery up for sale now?
I never had Bruce's but we had Kri-Pax and they've been gone a long long time. I found the only thing that comes close made by a outfit in Arlington. Mindy Lu's Pies.
Bruce's were the weekly treat when my dad and I would make the trip to Victoria. There was an old drive-up food place just inside city limits on 87 right after you passed under the 59 bypass. Think Sonic, but local local local kind of place.
Lemon...................!
Someone could make a fortune out of us ex-pat Texans here in the NorthEast by packing together a case of Bruces along with Wolf Brand Chili, Ranch Style Beans, Big Red, and Dr. Pepper with Imperial Sugar!
Bruces coconut pie was my favorite as a kid. My brothers was pecan. I liked that the coconut pie was just a tad bigger than his pecan. We would buy them for dessert at Dairy Queen in Seguin. I would take a plastic knife and cut little miniature slices. It was great.
A conversation came up about Bruce's pies the other day and was wondering if the company was still around. It is a shame that they are no longer in business. Pecan and coconut were my favorite when we lived in Nixon.
Pineapple and coconut (particularly the former) were the best I ever had. I was introduced to them when I was a young sailor in Corpus Christi, TX. I love that they didn't have any sickly sweet icing on the crust.
I just got on here to try to find them and order a case of pineapple pies. lol. Too bad they're gone. :-(
Bruce's pies were my all time favorite dessert before I learned how to bake. I live in San Antonio and my husband drove all the way to Von Army to get me some pies because I was pregnant and was craving them. This was the end of '94 or early '95. No pies even come close.
Out here in California the wife and I were racking our brains over the name of the "wonderful fried pies" we used to get in Austin. Luckily we found this thread. Too bad that Bruce's has been gone for some time. Our mouths were watering as listened to others recounting their favorite kinds. "Oh yeah, I remember the pineapple." "Oh yeah, I remember the peach." Of course our favorite was the pecan.
I found a small pie that is as close to the Bruce's Pie in a Shell station on the corner of Ben White Blvd. and Congress Ave in Austin Texas. They had Apple, Lemon, and Cherry. I tried the Lemon and let me tell you i was almost as good as a Bruce's Pie. Packaged similarly as a Bruce Pie, too.
Queenie45 what was the name?
lemmon and pineapple were the fab.. all the others were great too.
I remember, in the 70's going to the rear door and
they would sell you a dozen fresh hot pies for $1.00, only
because they were slightly damaged, at 801 springdale, in austin tx. I sure miss them, they were the best! They should try a comeback?
If they would come back, I would definitely work for them!! Miss them so much. Used to help my parents deliver them!! Yes I am the Baby Lynch Twin, Janett!!! I could go for a chocolate one about every hour!!! lol!!!
I'm 43 yrs old and back in the 80's I grew up in Waller, TX off of 290 West and I we bought Bruce's pies at the local gas station. I always bought the pineapple filled one. I also remember buying them in San Antonio at a gas station off of Probandt Street when visiting my Grandma. I'd love to have one again!
The apple, pecan ,chocolate, and lemon in that order... I was talking about the pies for the last two weeks ans had to Google em. I hope the owner have a good retirement they deserve it. They made a ton of south Texans happy.
I know a person that used to be a baker at Bruce Pies and he still bakes them if you would like to order some. I just ordered some for new Years 2016
Rachel would you please give us the info on how to cvontact this person/ I would love to order some when we are in Austin sometime.
I remember Bruce's pies, growing up on the southside of SA, myself. Seems Cracker Barrell has had luck bringing back a lot of nostalgia treats, like nickel candy (shaped like a nickel) and wax shaped like bottles, filled with a Kool-Aid like liquid.
Can you send me the info of where to order some of those Bruce's pies. Rachel Victoria, RachelV13@gmail.com
My favorite was the pineapple! Hope we can find someone that can come close. :-)
I used to eat Bruce's coconut pies for breakfast. We would buy them at the Bluffton store in Llano County. I have thought about them many times over the years. Apparently, he was once married to a court reporter and Glenda told me stories of those fresh pies. Jealous!
Grew up in Gonzales in the sixties, early seventies. Grandparents lived 12 miles north in Harwood where they owned and operated a gas station on Hwy 90 (was the main route between SA and Houston before I-10). Headed straight to the Bruce's pie rack every time I walked in there. If I could go back in time that's the first place I'd go.
As a kid living in the west side in San Antonio,I would buy them at a gas station with a NEHI orange soda. If anyone can get me a contact to buy something similar, email me at joeaguilar979@gmail.com. Nothing compares to Bruces. JA
would like to invest,or put my skills to good use
Cupp's is a great burger. Health Camp is better IMO. Bruce's are the best fried pie ever!
I would love to purchase some pecan, coconut and lemon pies I went to Allan Jr.High passed right by there it would charge 10cent for a pie hit of the press not even bagged up yet they are all good.
I wish that too for many years I live in Austin Texas
Nothing like Bruce sorry
I used to work for Diamond Shamrock in SA and we sold Bruce's Fried Pies. The Dolly Madison, Butterkrust, and Frito Lay drivers all said it had been shut down due to health code violations and old, outdated equipment. It was too expensive to get up to code, so they shut their doors.
Me too. I can’t stand the iced pies like Dolly Madison
I don’t know if this will get to you but I would LOVE to order some Apple pies!
I was a child in Temple, Tx when i had my first Bruce’s pie. Now I’m an adult and I remember them fondly. Let me know: theoncedeadartist@gmail.com
I would like to order some of those pies please! susan@nevarez.net
