Heralds of change

This morning there were nine stalks up. This afternoon they have become the first of our oxblood lilies. Or schoolhouse lilies. Or rhodophiala bifida. They're later in appearing than has been the case some years, but they're extremely welcome. And very beautiful.

I can't believe your oxblood lilies are blooming already! They must be in a bed you water. Mine are just nosing out of the ground, but it's going to take some rain to get them flowering en masse.

I haven't maintained my garden diary well lately, or I'd compare my "normal" dates. Memory says that I think it's normal to have rain the last week of August and oxblood lilies the first two weeks of September. The earliest I note in August 16, 2003. The only other years I note that they bloomed in August was 1996 and 2002.

This particular patch is in our front lawn, such as it is, which we have been watering every other "official" City of Austin watering date (i.e., every ten days). We have these flowers in at least five different locations, and they were gifts from two different friends. Each patch begins blooming at a different time. These are the harbingers. I do think that this is late for our firsties, but I haven't tried to check for any records. We've seen no spider lilies (lycoris radiata) yet in the yard.
